35mm Film Photography: Blending Color & Classic

My second wedding with Hicks Film Studio was a beautiful opportunity to explore something new and try blending both color and black and white 35mm film photography to tell the story of the day. I’ve always loved the timeless quality of black and white, but adding color brought a new warmth and vibrance to the moments captured in the photos.

The day itself was full of movement, laughter, and family. It was the kind of celebration that feels alive in every frame. The color rolls captured the soft summer tones and the general energy of the party, while the black and white images still hold a more emotional, timeless feel.

Some of my favorite photos weren’t the posed portraits, but the ones that might seem a little less than 'perfect': the bride laughing with family, the shuffle of people coming in for posed group shots, the details captured of the dress, the slight distortions, and texture of the film... Those moments are subtle. Quick. Imperfect, fleeting, but oh, so real and much more 'artsy'. And what I love most about film.

Shooting both color and black and white for this wedding taught me something about balance and about letting each frame speak for itself. Film has a way of slowing things down and inviting you to see differently. There’s a certain nostalgia in it, too, that offers a sense of permanence in a world that moves so quickly. Weddings mark those rare moments when life pauses long enough for us to notice how far we’ve come, who we’ve become, and the people who’ve shaped us along the way.

Whether in color or monochrome, each image becomes more than a photograph, it becomes a memory you can hold, book marking life's milestones. They become a reminder of how it felt to be there. To me, is the heart of photography, and what I hope to capture in all my client projects.

If you’re drawn to the classic, timeless, and nostalgic look of film, or curious what your own day could look like captured this way, I’d love to chat. Explore the gallery below.
